President-Executive Message – April 2023

The fight against injustice is beyond time and place

The 17th of Ramadan marked the Battle of Badr where a small band of persecuted and exiled believers were commanded to confront a much stronger enemy in order to establish justice on the earth, and so that ‘Allah may establish Truth with His words.’ (Al-Anfal 7).

The fight against injustice is beyond time and place, and we find ourselves confronted by similar struggles against injustice in our world.

One of those injustices is the struggle of the Canadian Muslim community to be treated fairly by the tax regime of Canada Revenue Agency. MAC has been fighting against Islamophobia and the unfair targeting of Muslim charities. Early in April we finally presented our side of the Charter challenge against the government. MAC decided that accepting this injustice is not an option and that it is our responsibility to fight back on behalf of the entire Muslim community, no matter the odds.

Abroad we also recently witnessed the desecration of AlMasjid AlAqsa and the subjecting of Muslim worshippers to despicable violence for exercising their right to worship and perform Itikaf. Like recent years, worshippers had a choice to make: either accept illegal occupation and give up their right to AlMasjid Al-Aqsa, or stand up for what is right and face the consequences. As we have seen time and time again, the brave men and women of Palestine chose to resist injustice and defend their rights.

Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who struggle in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?
(3:142)

While we are not responsible for the results of our efforts, we are responsible to do our best in standing up for justice, supporting the oppressed, putting our trust with Allah alone, and encouraging our community to do the same.  If we do this, Allah will indeed be with us.

وَلَيَنصُرَنَّ اللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَقَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ

Allah will surely aid & support those who support Him.  Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might. (22:40)

In these blessed days and nights, we turn to Allah to grant us success and to lift the yoke of oppression from our ummah.
