Statement Condemning the Synagogue Shooting on Jewish Worshippers on Passover in Chabad of Poway, California

Mississauga – April 28, 2019 – The Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) emphasizes the holistic message of Islam within the context of Canada’s diverse society.

“MAC offers its most heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families and all those affected by this horrific attack on worshippers in a Synagogue on Passover in Chabad of Poway in California. Our prayers are with our Jewish brothers and sisters during this incredibly trying time”.

MAC stands with all Canadians and faith communities in expressing our sense of loss and sadness at this outrageous attack. We express our solidarity with the Jewish community during this time of grief and repeat our assurance that we will collectively work against acts of hate and a rising inclination of assaults on houses of worship. There is never a justification to violate a sanctuary where the faithful meet to remember their Creator.

The sacredness of human life is a fundamental, and universal, value that all faiths mandate and we all pledge to protect. We may not be able to stop those who are driven by hate but we can make sure that we stand with each other in humanity and that, far from dividing us, our diverse backgrounds and different views add to our strength as a community and our resolve to uphold our common values.

It is incumbent on us all to do what we can to stop hate from spreading. We encourage the Canadian Muslim community to reach out to their Jewish neighbours in this time of grief. As the holy month of Ramadan approaches us, we will keep all victims and their families impacted in our deepest prayers.
