Message of the Executive Director – September 2020

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

I pray that all of you, your families and the communities around you are safe and well, inshaAllah.

We have recently begun the Islamic New Year and many of us will either be sending our children back to school or know people around us who are preparing for this transition. It will be a new beginning for all of us.
After an abrupt and unexpected halt to in-class teaching in March, many of us are now preparing for our children and youth to return back to the classrooms.
As I welcome you to the new school year, I want to assure you that our team worked hard to plan for this new normal. We explored various learning options and we examined how best to deliver instruction while ensuring the safety of our students. All of this was done with extensive consultation with parents. We invested in equipping our schools with the tools to deliver synchronous instruction online, while ensuring that our school routines are redesigned to handle the restrictions imposed by this pandemic.

While this is definitely a new normal with many uncertainties and many new challenges, there are lessons in our Islamic tradition that help us to gain perspective on embracing this new reality.  Let us reflect on the notion of hope – when the Prophet (saw) migrated from Makkah to Madinah – this was a drastic change and a difficult cut from his home city.  Certainly, there were many unknowns, many challenges, and hesitations.  However, the sense of hope and belief that Allah (swt) would grant goodness and would guide the generation towards something better and worthy of the struggle compelled the entire Muslim community to transition from Makkah to Madinah.  Let us find inspiration in these principles and continue to embrace the transitions ahead of us with the same hope, and trust in Allah(swt).

Our mosques and centers continue to be open and provide integral services within the community. Now, we are exploring ways to increase our program offerings in a safe and sustainable manner. Please check our websites and follow us on social media to learn more about the new programs and how to take advantage of them.
Finally, your continued understanding and support has been instrumental in keeping things moving.  We look forward to your cooperation and support as we all work together to build a safe and resilient environment where we can all grow, through the help of Allah(swt).  It is important that we continue to follow safe practices of physical distancing, wearing masks and avoiding crowded spaces and places in this time.

Additionally, I am excited to share with you my recent opinion piece in The Hill Times on how the Conservative Party can continue to appeal to Canadian Muslims by making amends and offering better policies. I have offered some specific recommendations that are a shared point of view among Muslim community leadership. To read my opinion piece click here.

Finally, your continued understanding and support has been instrumental in keeping things moving.  We look forward to your cooperation and support as we all work together to build a safe and resilient environment where we can all grow, through the help of Allah(swt)
